Parents urged to educate wards on family planning


Parents have been urged to educate and allow their teenage girls to adopt family planning. 

This when done will help reduce teenage pregnancy in the country. 

The Deputy Upper West Regional Director of Nursing Services in charge of Public Health Mrs Sophia Nyireh who stated this at a Family Planning sensitization durbar at Nadowli in the Upper West Region. 

She noted that the area has recorded high numbers of teenage pregnancy over the years in the regions most teenage girls cannot abstain from sex and charged parents to underscore the importance of family planning to help reduce teenage pregnancy in the country.

The sensitization saw staff of the Nadowli District Hospital and a cross section of the public matching through some principal streets of Nadowli. 

They held placards with inscriptions “Prevent maternal death now”, “make a safe choice on long term methods”, “prevent teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortion” as well as “reduce maternal and infant mortality” among others. 

The Deputy Upper West Regional Director of Nursing Services in charge of Public Health Mrs Sophia Nyireh said family planning helps women to space their children. 

Mrs. Nyireh noted that the practice prevents maternal deaths and improves the health of women. 

She added that the Upper West Region has achieved impressive results of family planning coverage compared to other regions in the country. 

A Midwife at the Nadowli District Hospital, Stella Bayor who updated the participants on the various family planning methods stated that people have the liberty to adopt a particular method they want. 

The sensitization organised by Ghana Health Service with support from I-pas, an NGO into health was on the theme “Family planning for Quality life”.
