Foreign Ministry Institutes Safety Measures For Ghanaians In South Africa

The Foreign Affairs Ministry says it is monitoring the Xenophobic developments in South Africa and efforts have already been put in place to ensure that safety of all Ghanaian nationals in that country. 

The Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey stated this today on the Floor of Parliament when she appeared to brief the House on the recent Xenophobic attacks in that country. 

She said communication from the Ghanaian Mission has so far indicated that no Ghanaian been affected in the xenophobic attacks.


The Minority Chief Whip Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka expressed concerned about the attacks and calling for a boycott of South African products in retaliation for the recent xenophobic attacks in that country.

Although the Foreign Affairs Minister, has said no Ghanaian has been affected in the recent events, the Asawase MP is pushing for a tougher sanction against South Africa.

He argued this would send a resounding signal to the South African government that the behavior of its citizens conflicts with the cordiality that is expected to exist among the peoples of the continent.

“I have never bought anything in South Africa apart from water, and food and I have said it in the pan-African parliament,” he said, rallying his colleagues to do same.
Immigrants have been victims of discrimination and even violence in South Africa after democratisation in 1994.


The Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also condemned that attacks.
