US Sanctions Venezuela Vice-President Over Drug Trafficking Claims The US has imposed sanctions on the new vice-president of Venezuela, Tareck el-Aissami, accusing him of involvement in international drug trafficking. By this, Mr. Aissami becomes a part of US narcotics "kingpin" sanctions list "for playing a significant role in international narcotics trafficking". A freeze has also been placed on his assets in the US and he has been barred from entering the country. Sanctions were also slapped on wealthy businessman Samark Bello, described as Mr. Aissami's "primary frontman". The statement from the US Treasury says Mr Aissami facilitated huge shipments of narcotics from Venezuela by air and sea. Meanwhile, there has been no immediate response from Mr. Aissami or Mr. Bello, although Mr. Aissami had previously denied criminal ties. SOURCE: BBC NEWS
