KAIPTC receives international recognition

The good works of the Kofi Annan International PeacekeepingTraining Centre (KAIPTC), continues to manifest, as an award was bestowed on the Centre for its exceptional accomplishments in Burkina Faso.

A statement issued by the KAIPTC said the Burkinabe Police Service presented a medal of honour to the KAIPTC for achieving outstanding work in the delivery of Police Pre-Deployment Training (PPDT) and the Police Middle Management Courses (PMMC) to a total of 738 Police officers, both in Accra and Ouagadougou.

It said the award was in recognition of excellent work delivered by the KAIPTC Mobile Training Team (MTT), led by Dr Amadou Fofana, to the Burkina Faso Police Service from 2011 till date. It noted that prior to the KAIPTC’s training of the Burkinabe Police Service, the nation was ranked 75th with respect to the deployment of Police Troops to the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions. 

It said currently, Burkina Fasso could boast of an enviable eighth position on the ranking of Military and Police Contributions to United Nations operations. The Commandant of the KAIPTC, AVM Evans expressed his delight at this significant achievement noting that “this is a double honour for the Mobile Training Team individually and the KAIPTC as an institution”.
 
“By excellently delivering on our mission to provide internationally-recognized capacity on African peace and security through training, our team are indeed worthy ambassadors of the quality that the Centre represents,” he added.  

Dr Amadou Fofana, who received the award said: “this is a personal honour for me; I am most grateful that the hard work of my colleagues and I have been recognized. This is a huge inspiration to us and an encouragement to us to continue with our good work”.

The statement said the medal of honour was proposed by the Burkina Faso Inspector General of Police (IGP), and granted by the Minister of Security, while the President of Burkina Faso initialled it.   

“In Burkina Faso, the medal of honour gives financial promotion to citizen beneficiaries, and for recipients abroad, it is for honour, for supporting the activities of the Police Service towards global peace in the sub-region,” it added.

The Norwegian and German governments have over the years financed the training of the Burkina Faso Police Service, and supported them in varied aspects of the programme.Since 2011, the KAIPTC Mobile Training Team has been providing Police Pre-deployment Trainings for Peace Support Operations in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali, Benin, and Malawi and to missions such as United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and ECOWAS Missions.

The Ghana Ministry of Defence established the KAIPTC in 1998 and commissioned it in 2004 to build upon and share Ghana's five decades of internationally acclaimed experience and competence in peace operations with other states in the ECOWAS region and the rest of Africa. 

This was in recognition of the need for training military, police and civilian men and women to meet the changing demands of multidimensional peace operations. 

The Centre is one of the three Peacekeeping Training Centres of Excellence mandated by the ECOWAS to offer training in peacekeeping and peace support operations (PSO) in Africa. 

The Centre delivers training courses in three thematic areas; Peace Support Operations, Conflict Management and Peace and Security Studies and also runs Masters and PhD programmes in same. 

The KAIPTC has a world-class research department that undertakes research in the thematic areas in Peace and Security. 

Located in Accra, Ghana, the KAIPTC is an internationally-recognized institution and has till date trained and tutored over 14,000 participants and students since its inception.
