Fire service creates learning platform for gas stations

The Ghana National Fire Service has created a platform for all oil marketing companies and operators of LPG stations to learn how to tackle gas explosions before the arrival of fire officers. 

It was identified at the open discussions that water that is used at the initial stage of gas explosions rather escalate the situation. 

Director, fire safety at the GNFS, DCFO Yawson said gas explosions recorded in the country would have been avoided if simple rules such switch of car engine before filling and loosen the regulator on the gas cylinder after use are adhere to. 

He frowned at the situation where gas tankers are immediately offloaded on arrival instead of allowing it to settle down for the proposed twelve hours. 
 
Numerous reports of gas explosions have been reported over the years with the latest being the trade fair explosion that killed more than ten people. 

Mandated by law to issue fire certificate and ensure that rules and regulations regarding the use, sales, and establishment are adhere to, the Ghana National Fire Service has been touring the country periodically to check the adherence or otherwise of the rules. 

Many stations have been closed down and  certificates seized. 

At an open forum held by the service with oil marketing companies and operators of LPG stations in Accra, Director, Fire safety, DCFO Yawson explained the characteristics of LPG and measures to consider in an event of explosion. 

Representative of the OMC's Kwaku Agyemang Dua made reference to the trade fair explosion and the lessons it offers to those in the business.

The participants raised concerns about the undue delays in the issuance of fire certificates, the late arrival of officers during explosions, lack of timely and relevant information on fire disasters among others. 

They were assured by the service of closer working relationship this year and the years ahead.
