UEW institutes scholarship fund The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has instituted the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to brilliant but needy students. So far, 60 beneficiaries have been recommended for the scholarship. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mawutor Avoke, who announced this, said the initiative is in line with the institution’s strategic plan which seeks to expand access for the underprivileged, the marginalized, persons living with disability and persons from less endowed schools, to financial support services. The Vice-Chancellor was addressing the matriculation ceremony for distance education students of the Institute for Educational Development and Extension for the northern sector of the country who are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Kumasi. 4,095 students were matriculated. Already 3,673 students have been matriculated from the southern sector. This brings the 2016/2017 academic year admissions to 6, 635 students. Prof. Avoke also announced that the Centre for Distance Education has introduced new degree programmes in Basic Education, Early Childhood Education and Social Studies, English Language, Mathematics, Accounting and Human Resource Management. He said the University is committed to giving continuing students and prospective applicants the opportunity to access higher education at their doorsteps and at manageable cost without sacrificing quality. In this, regard, four new study centres have been established at the Accra High School, Northern School of Business in Tamale, Offinso College of Education in Ashanti and Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga. This brings the total number of study centres to 37. Prof.Avoka reminded the fresh students that learning by distance entails a lot of challenges, particularly, for those who double up as full-time workers and parents. Prof. Avoke urged them to cultivate the habit of reading their modules before and after tutorials and form discussion groups to adequately prepare for quizzes and examinations. GBC
