Tearful Joe Biden awarded freedom medal by Obama

President Barack Obama has awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian honour to Vice President Joe Biden.
 
Mr. Obama praised Mr. Biden for what described as his "faith in fellow Americans, love for his country as well as his lifetime service to the country".
  
The award comes as both men prepare to leave office when Donald Trump is inaugurated on 20 January. 

A visibly emotional and surprised Joe Biden stood by as Mr Obama praised him. 

The award has been reserved only for handful recipients, including Pope John Paul II.
