Reconsider planned election of MMDCEs - Panelists to in-coming govenment 

Panelists on GBC’s Garden City Radio 'Super Morning Flight' have asked the incoming government to reconsider the proposal of election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), considering the inherent negative effects. 

The Member of Parliament-elect for Bantama in Kumasi, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, noted that choosing MMDCEs without any restrictions could go against the government and also work against the interest of the citizenry. 

According to him, the MMDCEs must be people who are loyal to the President and government, so as to share in his development agenda. 

A former President of the National Association of Local Authorities, Ebenezer Akuoko Frimpong, noted that the proposal if eventually carried out, will pose difficulties since governance in certain administrative districts and even regions, would then be ceded to a political party other than the party of the ruling government. 

Mr. Frimpong agreed with the proposal by the Constitution Review Committee that the President nominates five qualified persons who must be whittled down to three through an interview by the Public Services Commission before the District Assemblies eventually vote on them. 

For his part, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Abdul Salam, also disagreed with the planned popular votes on the MMDCEs. 

He explained that any MMDCE elected from outside the ruling government will rather be against the ordinary citizen, since such a district administrative head could refuse to implement programmes and projects initiated by the President and his party.
