ICU cautions out-going gov't against hasty contractual decisions 

The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Solomon Kotei, says it is important for the outgoing government not to engage in any hasty contractual decisions which can cause potential judgement debt when abrogated by any in-coming administration for lack of transparency.  

According to Mr. Kotei, when it becomes critical for outgoing government to engage in any contract agreements, it should be done with the understanding of the incoming administration.  

This will prevent the temptation of cancelling such agreements which will have dire consequences for the national economy in case of judgement debt.  

He said Ghana`s Transition Act which is aimed at ensuring smooth transfer of power after elections should be implemented in an atmosphere of trust.  

Mr. Kotei told GBC’s Radio Ghana that transition periods, should not be the time for blame game, because it does not create condition for mutual understanding between the outgoing and incoming administration.

Mr. Kotei condemned the situation where transition period are seen as times characterised by alleged reports of out-going government officials shredding files, missing with backups nowhere to be found and the incumbent's ill prepared nature for smooth transfer of power.

"We expect that those involved in the transition team, especially the out-going government, they have a lot to do because for business they expect a quick fluid resolution of the transition then everybody can continue with their businesses."

Mr. Kotei advised that nothing should be done to undermine the confidence of the business community during transition periods.
