NMC welcomes Supreme Court’s decision on content regulation law

The National Media Commission, NMC says it welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the constitutionality of certain aspects of NMC's Content Regulations, 2015 (LI2224) brought against it by the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, GIBA. 

The Commission believes that the right to free expression ought to be balanced against responsible practice. 

The Chairman of the NMC, Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng in a statement said the law enjoins both the public electronic communications networks and broadcasters to abide by minimum standards in the delivery of their content. 

The Commission said it is important that all stakeholders in the media environment recognise that, the decision of the court places much premium on individual judgement and professional responsibility than any directives the court could have placed on the media. 

The statement advised media practitioners to inject greater professional judgement in their delivery to support the nation's quest for peace and stability. 

The NMC says it would study the judgement critically and decide on its next line of action.
