Teachers To Be Professionally Licensed Before Engagement Teachers in the country`s schools will from this academic year acquire professional license to be issued by the National Teaching Council under the supervision of National Inspectorate Board (NIB) before they can be engaged as professional teachers. The move is to employ the right caliber of professionals and also improve upon the quality of Ghana's education. The Acting Chief Inspector of Schools at the National Inspectorate Board, Dr Augustine Tawiah announced this at a stakeholder’s information session on ‘Teacher Absenteeism’ in Accra. He said teaching is a noble profession and individuals cannot just enter into without the requisite qualification. Dr Tawiah said the move is to ensure that the right human resources are recruited to man the schools. He said the NIB, the licensing authority will organize licensing examination for teachers and those who qualify will be licensed and can be engaged in any of the schools in the country, be it private or public. He said the National Inspectorate Board is working out a methodology to get those in the teaching profession to go through the process and be issued with the license. Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Pre-tertiary Alex Kyeremeh said only seven percent of teacher absenteeism was recorded in the 2015-2016 academic year which is a good improvement. He attributed this success to government's engagement with the various heads of schools and intense monitoring by the National Inspectorate Board. Mr Kyeremeh also urged parents to take special interest in the activities going on in schools where their wards are being educated. GBC
