4-year strategic plan drawn to reduce infant mortality A four year strategic plan has been developed to help reduce new born deaths which account for over 40% of all infant deaths. Statistics show that, a greater number of newly born deaths occur during the first week of life, with 50% occurring in the first 24 hours. Deputy Director, Reproductive and Child Health of the Ghana Health Service, Dr.I sabella Sagoe-Moses explains who newborns are and steps being taken to reduce death among them. Dr. Sagoe-Moses also identified some cultural beliefs and practices which contribute to the spate of child-mortality. She hopes with the introduction of innovative strategies by 2018, new born deaths will be drastically reduced to 21 newborn deaths per one thousand live births annually. Dr. Sagoe-Moses added that private sector support is being solicited to help in achieving this goal. GBC
