Opposition parties demonstrate in Tamale against government The coalition of political parties in the Northern Region has embarked on a demonstration in Tamale today Monday August 22, 2016. The demonstration, dubbed “dimmiiya” demonstration was aimed at putting pressure on government to reduce utility tariffs by fifty percent. Dimiiya is a dagbanli term that means “times are hard” organizers of the demonstration say the cost utility tariffs are killing industries in the region. The demonstration was largely peaceful although police personnel were there to prevent any untoward action. After several hours on the streets of Tamale, the demonstrators converged at the Zogbeli Park where various political parties took turns to address the gathering. Some executives of the New Patriotic Party from the Upper West and Upper East regions joined their colleagues in Tamale for the demonstration. The NPP Parliamentary candidate for the Lawra constituency, Anthony Karbo, used the opportunity to call on Ghanaians to vote out the ruling NDC. He warned that, until that is done; Ghanaians will continue to face hardships. The Spokesperson for the coalition, Mohammed Abdul Kudus disclosed that, the similar demonstrations will be organized in the Upper East and Upper West Regions and possibly across all regional capitals unless government listens to their demands.
