One out of every three men considers spousal abuse normal -survey

Parliament has passed the domestic violence act in 2007 to address four major issues. They are incidence, attitude, determinants and consequences of domestic violence. 

The passage of the act influenced stakeholders to put several interventions in place to tackle the high numbers of violence against women and children. 
Despite these effects, cases of domestic violence continue to rise. 

According to a survey carried out statistical service, institute of development studies UK and the UKaid has shown that one out of every three men in Ghana think that abusing their spouses is a normal family affair. 

The survey was also to provide an in-depth understanding of domestic violence between the ages of 15-60 years. 

UK high commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin said the statistics are alarming and it shows how the right of girls and women are violated in a manner that defeats the purpose of democracy. 

Gender activists present at the forum charged the sector ministry to consider the survey report as an urgent need to safe the many women who still suffer violence at the peril of their lives

Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur in a Facebook post said: “As a Government, we are committed to encouraging initiatives such as this study that will enable us to address prevailing issues that hinder our development as a country. We will continue to support research work and innovation in all fields including important areas like domestic violence.”
