ISIL leader killed in US drone strike - Defence official

The leader of ISIL’s branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan was killed in an American air drone strike in July, a US defence official confirmed on Friday.

The Afghan ambassador to Pakistan had earlier said that a strike had killed Hafiz Saeed Khan.

The death would be a blow to efforts by the so-called Islamic State to expand its control over territory and its jihadist brand into Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The strike took place in the Kot district of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, the US defence official said.
