Gushegu ‘witches’ receive LEAP allowances Authorities of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) have started payment of allowances for alleged witches at the Gushegu Camps following a report by Radio Ghana few months ago. Activities at the Gushegu District Assembly came to a halt on Monday June 14 after the alleged inmates besieged the office premises demanding the payment of their two years LEAP allowance. However, authorities intervened swiftly after the report, and facilitated processes for the payment. They have also rolled them onto the E-zwich payment system to avoid further difficulties in payment and financial malfeasance. The District has three camps with more than 160 inmates. They include Kpatinga, Nabuli and Leli Dabari witches camps. GBC’s correspondent Mohammed Fugu who re-visited the camps this morning reports that the faces of the inmates are full of smiles and joy as they cash out their allowances. A caretaker of the Kpatinga Witch Camp, Adam Musah Tindana said the allowance will help alleviate the plight of the inmates since most of them are neglected and banished by their relatives. According to him, life at the camp is a major issue to reckon with and urged government and other benevolent organizations to come out with more interventions that will help improve on the livelihood of the inmates. He commended Radio Ghana for exposing their plight to authorities for the swift intervention. GBC
