VRA calls for involvement of children in energy conservation campaign

Madam Abla Fiadjoe, Director of General Services of the Volta River Authority (VRA), has urged VRA ladies to involve children in their energy conservation campaign to reduce the amount of energy use and to save cost.

She said the involvement of the children is critical because they are able to absorb the messages from the foundation and impact it positively in an effective and efficient manner.

Madam Fiadjoe said this in Accra at the launch of energy conservation campaign by the VRA Ladies Association Accra branch.

The campaign was necessitated by complaints of high cost of electricity with women at the centre since most of them control the house and operate businesses that use more electricity.

She urged the Association to develop a jingle with pictures and famous personalities in the energy sector to catch the attention of the public on the importance of using energy wisely.

She said it is imperative for the campaigners to craft a message to suit different types of audiences for improved impacts.

Madam Fiadjoe asked the Association to engage all especially the women association across the country since they shape the consumption habit at home, saloons and other businesses.

Mrs Sophia Tijani, Manager at the Technical Training of VRA, explained that energy conservation is to reduce the amount of energy use.

Mrs Tijani advised those who use electricity to switch off the lights when no one is in the room, replace all incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs because it helps to save GH₵ 13 per bulb in a month.

She advised the public to also replace all T10 fluorescent tube and T8 fluorescent tubes with LED tubes and save a minimum of GH₵ 3 per bulb a month and as much as possible use natural lighting by drawing curtains, and opening louvres.

Mrs Tijana said the public should replace bad seals on the fridge door, switch off their fridge when going to bed and replace faulty thermostat in the fridge as a means to conserve energy.

She explained that, these energy conservation mechanisms are important because it help to save money, electricity bills, reduce cost of maintenance, improve the economy and the environment through decrease pollution.

Madam Stella Dey, National President of the Association, said the Association was established in 1996 with the aim to unite all female employees of the authority, resolve issues affecting their welfare and participate in educational campaigns to conserve energy.

She said the Association had undertaken educational activities to build their capacity in contributing to the spread of timely information to the public about energy use especially to the women group across the country.

Madam Dey said her outfit had engaged in health programmes, walk and donations to orphanage and institutions and instituted project to support brilliant but needy student in the resettlement communities.

She said the association would visit schools, churches, markets to educate the public on the need to conserve energy and save the dams and the thermal plant.
