Toilet Lagoon 

Sanitation coverage in Ghana is said to be about 15 percent. Available statistics also indicates that 19 percent of Ghanaians practice open defecation. This implies that about five million Ghanaians do not have access to toilet in their homes and are forced to defecate in the bush, at the beach and in drains. Some use public latrines which are also in deplorable state. The unbearable long queues people have to join before defecating, using public latrines make them unattractive for residents. Faecal-oral transmissions are a source of concern to healthcare delivery in Ghana. Diseases such as cholera, diarrhea and typhoid are very common because of open defecation. GBC’s Dominic Hlordzi visited the bank of the Chemu Lagoon and a site near the Canoe Landing Site popularly called Zigin-shore where open defecation is practiced in Tema Newtown and has filed this report.
