Africa Celebrates AU Day With Call On Leaders To Be Selfless 

A Senior Lecturer at Koforidua Polytechnic, Dr. Kwaku Owusu Acheampong, has called on African leaders to shun selfish gains and be committed to the struggle for the development of the continent as moved by their predecessors.

Dr. Acheampong pointed out that the spirit of Pan Africanism used to fight for continental unity by the forbears has waned and needs to be rekindled.

Dr. Acheampong made the statement in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana to mark AU Day in Koforidua.

He said even though successes have been chalked up by the Union over the past five decades, there is still much to be done.

He said although the Union can boast of a beautiful edifice serving as a secretariat in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and cultural exchanges as well as scholarships, there is more room for improvement.

Dr. Acheampong suggested that African Union issues should be taught at the basic school level to enable the pupils to develop interest in Africanism and serve their countries and continent like their forefathers, Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Sekou Toure of Guinea and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana.
