Refugee crisis: EU and Turkey reach 'breakthrough' deal

Turkey and the European Union have reached an agreement on a proposal to tackle the influx of refugees into Europe. 

Officials say the next step involves the presentation of the proposal to EU leaders at a key European Council meeting due to be held on the 17th and 18th of this month. 

European Council President, Donald Tusk, said the leaders made a breakthrough, and he is hopeful of sealing a deal at the next meeting.  

He said the progress sent a clear message that the days of irregular migration to Europe are over.  

The announcement came at the end of a long day of meetings in Brussels, during which Turkey is said to have asked for an additional three point three billion dollars in return for checking the flow of refugees across the Aegean Sea.
