Sack Dr Barnabas Gaudau as Medical Director– Upper West Hospital Staff Some health and non-health staff at the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa have reiterated calls for the termination of the appointment of Dr Barnabas Gandau as the Medical Director of the facility. They said Dr Gandau a trained gynecologist who also hails from the region posting to the Upper West in 2006 at a time when maternal deaths were at its peak in the region. They alleged that Gandau rather chose to serve alongside other gynecologists at Tamale in the Northern Region. The staff made this known when they presented a petition to the government through the Deputy Regional Minister, Dr Mohammed Musheibu-Alfa after staging a second in series demonstrations to register their displeasure over the issue. Presenting the petition on behalf of the group at the forecourt of the Regional Coordinating Council, the Regional Secretary of the Health Services Workers Union, Felix Pigruu said Dr Chris Fofie started working as the first Ghanaian Gynecologist in the Upper West Region in 2007 and has since been the only gynecologist in the region until 2014 when one Dr Aziz came to join him for eight months and left after complaining of inadequate opportunities and marginalisation. Receiving the petition on behalf of the government, the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Mohammed Musheibu-Alfa, commended the aggrieved staff for their peaceful demonstration. He explained that since the Regional Coordinating Council is not responsible for the appointment, it will forward their grievances to the appropriate quarters for redress. The Deputy Regional Minister added that it is their constitutional right to demand good services but urged them to go back to their posts and deliver services to patients at the hospital. GBC
