Kumasi: Court orders demolition of houses at Atwima Nwabiagya

A number of houses at various levels of development on 10 plots of land at Achiase Nwansamire in the Atwima Nwabiagya district of Ashanti have been demolished following an order by a Kumasi High Court.

The land was duly leased to a couple by Asantehene and Asantehemaa in 2013. 

While the couple was processing documents covering the plots of land, one Nana Akwasi who claimed to be the chief with oversight responsibility of the land, began selling portions to some private developers. 

Radio Ghana sources said any time the couple visited the land, Nana Akwasi and some of his family members insulted and threaten them with sticks and machetes and sometimes invoke curses on them. 

The situation therefore compelled the couple to file a writ at a Kumasi High Court, but the defendants refused to attend court anytime the case was called. 

The Court initially granted an interim injunction on the land and a copy of the order was posted on the buildings on the land, some of the developers defaced the order and continued with the construction work. 

The High Court subsequently entered judgment in favour of the couple in July last year and granted them a writ of possession. 

The court has also ordered that the self-acclaimed chief, Nana Akwasi and one Adwoa Serwaa to pay a fine of GH¢120,000 to the couple. 

Those affected by the demolition have been ordered not to attempt to redevelop the land. 

In an interview with those who were affected, told our correspondent that they were not served notice to stop developing the land. 

Meanwhile, evidence of pasted notices from the Kumasi High Court on the walls of the residential developments proved that the developers had been duly served.
