Gov’t Releases Extra Funds To Fight Meningitis  


The government of Ghana has released extra funds to curb the outbreak of the deadly meningitis disease in the country. 

The health ministry is set to release additional amount of GHc200, 000 to tackle the situation. 

This forms part of measures to prevent  the spread of the virus.

The  Ministry is also distributing antibiotics to the Ashanti, Upper East, Upper West, Northern, and the  Bono-Ahafo region, which has been hardest hit by the disease.

The Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia, made this known last Tuesday during a two-day visit to some regions affected by the disease.
 
Speaking to health personnel in the Brong Ahafo, Alex Segbefia assured them of government‘s continuous support to prevent the disease from spreading further.

 “I’ve already asked for the release of GHc200, 000 further, this time not just to Brong Ahafo Region, but we’ve spread the amount in small dosages across all the regions of the country because there are some sporadic one of cases reported in each of them.” 

The Minister said from the allocation, Brong Ahafo, which has recorded most of the meningitis cases, will receive about GHc90, 000 to add up to what they already have.

For his part, the Techiman Deputy District Health Director in charge of Public Health, Dr. Osei Kuffour Afreh, called on government to assist them with logistics to help them deal with the situation.
 
He said they lack vehicle for surveillance explaining that “for meningitis, active surveillance is much needed
