Police to disband political vigilante groups


The police administration has planned to disband all vigilante groups associated with political parties ahead of this year’s general elections.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, DCOP John Kudalor said the Attorney General has advised that all those groups are “unlawful and illegal.”

Groups such as Azorka Boys from Tamale and associated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Bolga Bulldogs associated with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been reported on many occasions engaging in aggressive clashes during political activities and elections.

Various interest groups have expressed concerns about their existence and the potential threat to security.

DCOP Kudalor said the police will be meeting with the political parties to fashion out how to ban those groups.

He said they will also prosecute the leadership of such groups that have gained notoriety for engaging in acts of lawlessness during political activities.
