Tribute delivered to the late freedom fighter commander Jorge 

A tribute was delivered Monday to the late freedom fighter commander Jorge Risquet Valdez at Freedom Centre in Accra.

He was described as an African hero who contributed significantly to the struggle for national liberation and against apartheid and racism on the African continent. 

He was part of an international force, together with Ghana`s Captain Kojo Tsikata, which paved the way for negotiation to lead the freedom of South Africa, the independence of Namibia and the consolidation of the independence of Angola.

Commander Jorge Risquet Valdez was a founding member of the Communist Party in Cuba, a veteran of Sierra Maestra and Commander of the Patrice Lumumba Internationalist Battalion in Congo Brazzavile and director of Cuban International Civil Mission in the Republic of Angola.

Commander Valdes passed on in Havana, Cuba at the age of 85.  He was formerly designated Commander of the Cuban Revolution which fought to topple the British dictatorship. 

Speaking at the forum, the Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia described him as someone who expressed himself freely. 

He said the death of this giant of the Cuban revolution and outstanding progressive internationalist leaves the world to emulate his selflessness and solidarity.
