Nurses at Accra Psychiatric Hospital embark on sit down strike for non-payment of salary arrears

A  Staff Nurse at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and PRO of the affected nurses, Philip Frempong Okyere says nurses at the hospital have embarked on sit down strike for non-payment of salary arrears for the past ten months.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, Mr Frempong Okyere said several attempts to resolve the crisis have failed.  

Reacting to the Psychiatric Nurses strike, the PRO of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman said all documents on the nurses’ arrears are now ready and by the end of the month they will be paid.

Mr Goodman appealed to the nurses to consider the plight of the patients and return to work while their issues are addressed. 

Meanwhile, Basic Needs, an NGO working in Mental Health and development has appealed to nurses of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital to reconsider their decision to go on strike, because of the special duties they perform with regard to the unfortunate patients. 

Making the appeal in an interview with Radio Ghana, the Executive Director of the organization Peter Yaro said despite the delay in the payment of their arrears, the nurses must see their responsibility as crucial and so should return to work while government addresses their issues.
