Lecturer calls for re-introduction of environmental studies into curriculum

A lecturer at the Environmental Sciences Department of the University of Cape Coast, Ernest Amankrah Afrifa, has called for the re-introduction of environmental studies into the academic curriculum to instill good sanitation practices in the youth. 

He said the youth are the appropriate people to be given such training. 

Mr Afrifa said this at the end of a 10-day  programme on recycling. 

The Regional leader of the programme dubbed Recycle Up Ghana, Sampson Oboh, said the project is one of the measures that would address the problem of sanitation in the country. 

A Climate Scientist from the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Browne Klutse, said though the National Sanitation Day Exercise is a good initiative, there is the need for  intensive public education to change people’s attitudes towards sanitation issues. 

She urged government and other stakeholders to consider sponsoring such initiatives to bring young people together to deliberate on sanitation and provide ideas that would help solve the problem of waste management. 

The participants mostly from second cycle institutions in the Central region brainstormed on plastic waste pollution and its adverse consequences on the community as well as developing local solutions for tackling the problems.
