GMA Challenges Legal Action Against It By Private Citizen The Ghana Medical Association, GMA, is challenging the capacity of a private citizen, Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku, to sue the Association over its ongoing strike. Mr Kusi-Poku, who is also the General Secretary of the UFP has filed the suit at an Accra High Court to restrain the GMA from continuing with the strike and also put an injunction on any future strike by the Association. The GMA has however filed a conditional appearance at the court questioning the locus of the plaintiff for going on with the suit. Counsel for the GMA, Gary Nimako told the court that the ongoing impasse is between the Association and the Government and therefore finds no merit in the suit filed by Mr Kusi-Poku, who is not an interested party. Mr Nimako prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable him file the necessary processes. It has therefore been adjourned to the 26th of this month. Other reliefs being sought by the plaintiff is a declaration by the court that the ongoing strike by the GMA is illegal and an order to compel the doctors to resume negotiations with the government. Meanwhile, the United Cadres Front of NDC says if for nothing at all, striking workers especially doctors must consider tax payers whose monies were used to educate them and return to work. The group said patients must not be used as a bait to lure government to do their bidding. Its General Secretary, Efanam Nyarku, said this at a news conference in Accra. He appealed to the GMA to sacrifice for the country to grow and develop as their current stance only undermines the successes chalked up over the years in health delivery. GBC
