UN chief urges calm in Burundi vote

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has asked Burundian authorities to ensure that today's election is carried out peacefully.  

He said all must be done to ensure security and a peaceful atmosphere during the election.

Mr. Ban further called on all parties to refrain from any acts of violence that could compromise the stability of Burundi and the entire region. 

Burundi goes to the polls today with President Pierre Nkurunziza widely expected to win a third consecutive term despite international condemnation and thousands of people fleeing feared violence.
