Skin disease afflicts inmates in Ho central prisons

The Ho central prisons is battling with a contagious skin disease called scabies which has infected more than four hundred inmates. 

Scabies is an infectious itchy skin disorder caused by a parasite called the scabies mite.

According to a Ghanaian Times report, a remand prisoner suffering from the ailment was so irritated by his plight that he stripped naked in the court room to show the extent to which the disease had affected his body. 

The Deputy Director of Prisons in-charge of the Volta Region, Victor Agbelengo blamed the problem on congestion and intense heat in the prison. Apart from that, Mr. Agbelengo said the facility does not have adequate medication to treat such skin diseases. 

He said the spread of the disease has been worsened by the lack of adequate supplies of detergents and other personal hygiene items.
