Parliament approves Supreme Court nominees

Parliament has approved the two Justices appointed by the President as Justices of the Supreme Court. 

The Two nominees, Justice Yaw Appau and Justice Gabriel Pwamang were referred to the Appointments Committee of Parliament where they were vetted for the positions.

Presenting the report of the Appointments Committee for the approval of the nominees, the Chairman of the Committee, Ebo Barton-Odro said the nominees have satisfied the needed requirements and are therefore qualified to be appointed as Justices of the Supreme Court. 

The Two Justices were quizzed by the Appointments Committee on wide range of issues. These include Judicial Corruption, Appointment of the EC Chairman, death penalty, delays in justice delivery, custodial sentencing, the Speaker of Parliament acting as President among others. 

The Chairman of the Committee who is also the 1st Deputy Speaker Ebo Barton-Odro made a case for the approval of the two nominees, whiles the MP for Bekwai, Joe Osei Owusu supported the approval of the nominees.

The MP for Ashaiman and Deputy Majority Leader, Alfred Agbesi also gave reasons for the approval of the Justices to the Supreme Court.

Born on the 2nd August 1951 Justice Yaw Appau was called to the Bar in 1982. He served in various capacities in the Judiciary and was recently appointed the sole commissioner of the Judgment Debt Commission.

Justice Gabriel Pwamang on the other hand was born on the 17th of August 1960 and called to the Bar in 1988. 

He was one time First Deputy General Secretary of the PNC, a member of the Constitution Review Commission among other national positions. 

Having been approved, the two nominees will now wait for a swearing-in by the President to serve as Justices at the Supreme Court.
