Veterinary Services Department destroys more than 28,000 birds to check spread of Avian influenza

The Veterinary Services Department of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has destroyed 28,400 birds since symptoms of the avian influenza disease were detected in a poultry farm in Accra and another in Tema. 

The birds were destroyed to avoid possible spread to other farms while waiting for the official results of samples sent to the Organization for Animal Health in Geneva. 

The Ashanti Regional Director of the Veterinary Services, Dr Kofi Quansah Filson made this known at a programme in Kumasi to sensitise poultry farmers to bio-safety measures to protect their farms against diseases. 

He noted that there is no need to panic as adequate measures have been put in place to reduce the impact of the disease on farmers in the event of an outbreak in Ghana.
