Government Directs MMDAs to ensure strict compliance with building regulations

Government has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as relevant state regulatory institutions and law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with building codes and laws guarding environmental protection in the country. 

The directive, announced by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo forms part of measures by government to curb the impact of unanticipated floods and fire disasters that could result in loss of lives and property.

He was speaking at a thanksgiving service held at Madina E.P Trinity Parish to climax the four-day second synod of Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana Meridian Presbytery. 

The Regional Minister appealed to benevolent organisations and individuals to provide relief items and other forms of humanitarian aid to victims of the twin disaster to complement government’s support.

While expressing condolence to families of the dead as well as sympathy to those who have lost their properties or indirectly affected by the incident, he condemned the rising trend of indiscipline and lawlessness among the people.

Mr Afotey Agbo announced that the adjoining roads to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle that have been closed to traffic will be opened by Tuesday June 9 after clearance of debris and repair works.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church- Ghana, Right Reverend Dr Seth Agidi congratulated the Ghana National Fire Service, the Police and other volunteers in the rescue mission and intervention in averting further disaster.

He urged the Church not to shirk its social responsibility to provide humanitarian assistance in the form of blood donation, food, clothing and other relief items to the surviving victims.

The Synod Moderator of the E.P Church, Meridian Presbytery, Rev. Dr. Major Bliss Agbeko urged Ghanaians to observe the three-day mourning declared by the government to demonstrate their compassion and sympathy to the departed and their relatives.

He also called on Christians to practice the Bible, by proclaiming the word of God as faithful Disciples of Christ.
