Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences lecture inaugurated in Accra

In less than 65 years, there will be no more breeds to reckon as food animals.

This is because currently animal breeds are dying out at a rate of six breeds per month which represent 30 percent of the world's breeds.

A Professor in Animal Sciences and the current Honorary Secretary of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Benjamin Ahunu said the nation imports millions of dollars of poultry which alone constitutes 80 percent of the meat imports while domestic production accounts for only 30 percent total annual consumption.

This he said is undoubtedly a huge drain on Ghana's foreign exchange resources.

However, Professor Ahunu says one way to curb this expenditure is to encourage internal production of livestock and poultry.

He said this at the inaugural lecture of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra.
