FIFA President Sepp Blatter Under Investigation

FIFA President Sepp Blatter is being investigated by US officials as part of their inquiry into corruption at the world football body. 

The news came hours after Mr Blatter announced he was stepping down from his role. 

US prosecutors launched a criminal inquiry last week, with seven FIFA officials arrested in Switzerland, part of a group of 14 people indicted. 

Two days after the arrests, Mr Blatter was re-elected president of FIFA. 

Mr Blatter however said FIFA needs profound restructuring. 

Meanwhile, a Football Analyst, Lawyer, Moses Foh Amoaning says the decision taken by Sepp Blatter President of FIFA to resign could be attributed to information he had concerning the corruption scandal that hit officials of FIFA. 

He said being the head of the organization, the possibilities of he being implicated cannot be ruled out. 

Lawyer Amoaning called for a new united sporting body for Africa to manage soccer and other sporting activities.

In a related development, US officials have denied that Washington had any hand in Sepp Blatter's shock decision to resign as President of FIFA. 

Asked if the US had pushed Blatter out of world football's governing body, the State Department's senior advisor for strategic communications, Marie Harf, said the US government does not have a position on who the President of FIFA is. 

The 79-year-old Blatter has faced increasing calls to step aside after the US Department of Justice last week levelled accusations of rampant, systemic and deep-rooted corruption against some of the sport's leading officials. 

Fourteen officials and marketing executives have been accused by US investigators of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering. 

Blatter himself has not been implicated, but seven officials were arrested in a dawn raid on a Zurich hotel, accused of taking more than 150 million dollars in bribes.
