NPP Northern Caucus MPs, NDC and others condemn Upper East Chairman Acid Attack

The Chairman of the NPP Northern Caucus in Parliament, Boniface Gambila, has condemned the attack on the Party's Upper East Regional Chairman. 

He said the attack is mind boggling and has therefore called for all to stay calm as investigations continue.

The NDC has also condemned the acid attack on the Upper East NPP Chairman, Adam Mahama. 

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the Party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said the cowardly murder represents a major setback to the country's democracy.

The NDC urges the Police to intensify investigations into the heinous crime with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book. 

The Police should also not treat the matter as an internal party issue but one that has serious national security implications. 

The statement also called on the leadership of the NPP to take urgent steps to quell the growing level of violence and lawlessness that has characterized the activities of the party resulting in the loss of life.

It added that these acts of violence and lawlessness are casting an undeserved slur on the reputation of the country. 

The statement however called on all political pundits to exercise the greatest level of circumspection in discussing the matter in view of its sensitive nature.

Alan Kyerematen, a former Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), has also condemned the attack on the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, describing it as “barbaric” and “criminal”.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Alan urged the Police Service and other security agencies to “do  everything possible to apprehend the perpetrators of the crime”.

The Progressive People's Party, PPP, on its part has expressed sympathy with members of the NPP and extend condolences to the children, wife and family  of Adam Mahama on his death. 

A statement by the National Secretary of the party, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, called for calm while the police take steps to identify, apprehend and prosecute perpetrators of the dastardly act.

Meanwhile, A Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr. Bossman Asare, says the acid attack on the NPP's Upper East Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama is a major indictment on Ghana's democratic credentials.  

He believes the attack and death will serve as a lesson for the major political parties to stop preventing the police from punishing party members who cause mayhem.

Dr. Asare called on the Police and leadership of the NPP to take  steps  to prevent any reprisal attacks.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, he noted that the current development may  affect the party's chances in 2016 if the wranglings within it are not handled well.
