U/E Regional Minister express readiness for Sanitation Day Exercise

The Upper East Regional Minister, James Zuuga Tiigah said adequate measures have been put in place in readiness for the National Sanitation Day exercise to be held in the region tomorrow, May 2nd. 

He said materials required for the smooth take off of the exercise are equally in place. As part of preparations, 10 thousand litter bins have been dispatched to three zonal areas in the region namely the Eastern, Central and Western zones. 

For the Central zone, the focus will be on Bolgatanga, whilst the Navrongo Municipality takes care of the Western Eastern Zone. 

The eastern zone on other hand, has the Bawku Municipality as its focal point. Mr Tiiga, however echoed the urgent need for traditional authorities to take ownership of tomorrows exercise by enjoining their subjects to take active part in the exercise. 

The Regional Minister, bemoaned the present sanitary condition in the region and mentioned open defecation, often referred to as ‘free range’ and indiscriminate littering of plastic waste as the two major challenges confronting sanitation in the region. 

He said for the region to overcome these challenges, all hands must be on deck and called for attitudinal change. According to him, education and the urgency for landlords to provide toilet facilities were key to addressing the challenge.

Mr Tiiga also appealed to residents of the region to see sanitation as shared responsibility since it affects individual. He therefore called on the people to join the campaign and participate massively in tomorrow’s exercise. 

Mr Edward Ayagle, is the MCE for Bolgatanga. He also expresses the regions’ readiness to the upcoming event and said vigorous sensitization has been done ahead of the clean-up exercise.
