Labour Unions in Bolgatanga observes May Day Celebration


In the Upper East Region, Correspondent Isaac Asare reports that the occasion of this year’s May Day celebration was marked with a procession through the principal streets of Bolgatanga. 

Some of the workers clad in various union attire had placards some of which read: “Restore the energy crisis now”, “Commit resources to power”, Dumsor Dumsor is killing us”. Workers from the various unionized labour groups later converged on the Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga to observe the day. 

The national theme for this year’s celebration: ‘Addressing Energy Crisis: The Role of organized labour”, was chosen with recourse to the present crisis in the country’s energy sector. 

Reading the speech on behalf of the General Secretary, which focus on the need to fix the energy crisis, the Regional Secretary for the TUC, Augustine Adongo Apambilla, commended workers and labour unions for their invaluable role towards nation building. 

He said workers deserve better conditions of service and therefore expect government to stand by them by creating the needed working environment for them to operate. 

Mr Apambilla, expressed regret about rumour of staff rationalization in the public sector and drew governments’ attention to the present energy crisis and urged it to help fix the problem in order to prevent job loss.  

The Upper East Regional Minister, James Zuuga Tiiga, expressed regret about the energy situation and said the deficit has resulted in load management. This, he noted said has brought untold effects on individuals, industries and the country at large. 

Mr Tiiga said government was taking giant steps to bring the situation under control and will require the support of all Ghanaians. 

He revealed plans for the construction of a multi -purpose hydro dam at Pwalugu to meet the growing demand for power. Its completion will help address the power problems in the Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Regions. 

There were solidarity messages from the various union groups present at the occasion. 

Some workers claiming were awarded with citation and table top refrigerators, and laptop computers and mobile phones. 

Madam Juliana Ajololoni from the Regional TUC was given a special award. She also took home a fridge and a citation.
