"Deteriorating" situation in Yemen The situation in Yemen has been described as "deteriorating" by the UN Secretary-General. In a statement on Tuesday, Ban Ki-moon said he was "gravely concerned" and deplored the heavy fighting between armed groups and Yemeni presidential guards throughout the capital, Sana'a. The Security Council also held a private meeting to discuss the sensitive security situation in the country. Dozens of people have recently been killed in Yemen in a succession of bomb attacks. The UN chief called on all sides to immediately cease hostilities and take the necessary steps to restore full authority to the legitimate government institutions. Yemen has been trying to restore stability following political turmoil that started with protests in 2011 forcing President Ali Abdallah Saleh to step down the following year.
