US President calls on all nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions


The United States President has urged every country to cut greenhouse gas emissions in a bid to halt climate change.

President Barack Obama told the Climate Summit at UN headquarters on Tuesday that the United States is committed to building a climate resilient infrastructure.

He said the nations that contribute the least in harmful carbon emissions often stand to lose most.

President Obama called on all countries to work together.

"We recognise our role in creating this problem. We embrace our responsibility to combat it. We will do our part and we will help developing nations do theirs. But we can only succeed in combating climate change if we are joined in this effort by every nation, developed and developing alike. Nobody gets a pass."

President Obama said that he was directing the country's federal agencies to begin factoring climate resilience into international development programmes and investments.

He also announced a new effort to deploy what he called the "unique" scientific and technological capabilities of the United States to help vulnerable nations to prepare for weather related disasters and better plan for long-term threats like steadily rising seas.
