Minister pushes for Fisheries Act to increase Ghana’s revenue generation

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Madam Sherry Ayitey, says the fishing industry if carefully harnessed can contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s revenue generation. 

She said export of fish has the potential to expand the country’s fish market internationally, if regulations on illegal fishing methods are enforced swiftly. 

Madam Ayitey said this when she paid a maiden working visit to the Eastern Sector Enforcement Unit Headquarters in Tema. 

The visit afforded the Minister and her Deputy, Benita Okittey-Duah, an opportunity to interact with staff of the Department to discuss challenges confronting the Enforcement Unit. 

Madam Ayitey said the illegal methods of fishing must be strictly enforced to help Ghana to penetrate fish markets in western countries. 

The National Coordinator of the Fisheries Unit, Captain Emmanuel Ayesu Kwarfo, said the Unit is discharging its operations to ensure that perpetrators are arrested and appropriately sanctioned. 

The Tema Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Samuel Quartey, appealed to the Minister to assist the Department in enforcing the Fisheries Law.
