World Humanitarian Day being Observed Today 

Today is World Humanitarian Day, a global day designated by the U.N. General Assembly in 2008 to celebrate humanity and the spirit of humanitarianism, teamwork and bravery. 

It is also to recognise the sacrifices and contributions of humanitarian personel and those who risk their lives to offer help and hope to others. 

Humanitarian Day also recognises the day the U.N Special Representative to Iraq, Sergio Viera De Mello and 21 others died when the UN headquarters in Baghdad was bombed in August 2003. 

In Ghana, the day is marked to celebrate personel of the then National Mobilization Programme, now NADMO, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Police Service, Immigration Service, the Ghana Red Cross Society, the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Ambulance Service and other humanitarian services for their role in helping to save lives. 

That was Kofi Portuphy, National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, speaking to Radio Ghana on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day.
