Port congestion impacting negatively on trade

Congestion at the country's ports is impacting negatively on trade and causing significant loss in revenue to the state.  

In this regard the Association of Ghana Industries in collaboration with the Ghana Shippers Authority is bringing together stakeholders in the transport and shipping industry to brainstorm on ways to deal with the situation.  

The meeting under the auspices of the Ministries of Trade and Industry and Transport seeks to develop advocacy for government action to reduce congestion at the ports. 

The meeting which comes of tomorrow in Accra will come up with strategies to reduce Port charges as a result of delays.  

The Head of Public Relations at Ghana Shippers Authority, Fred Asiedu Dartey, tells Radio Ghana that the move has become necessary due to increased volumes of cargo through the country's ports.

Mr. Asiedu Dartey also disclosed that a study by the Shippers Authority indicate that shippers pay about 20 million Ghana Cedis in rent charges and about 22 million Ghana Cedis in Congestion charges in 2010.
