Ghana have missed the chance to make their debut at the Women's Olympic Football Tournament at the 2008 Beijing Games. The Black Queens failed to secure victory in the play-off match after losing 5-1 to Brazil in the last remaining qualifier at the Workers Stadium in the Chinese capital on Saturday. A new double function triangular warning light for drivers has been launched in Accra to address collision, resulting from broken down vehicles on roads. The warning light which provides a high beam illuminated flash for visibility up to one kilometre away, also comes in a heavier form with a sturdy fordable support to enable it withstand the wind. Several houses, including schools in Sandema in the Builsa District, were damaged when a rainstorm hit the district. Bungalows of police personnel and nurses, the Sandema Senior High School and churches had their roofs ripped off.The Builsa District Chief Executive, Thomas Kofi Alonsi, advised the people to plant trees around their houses to serve as wind break.

The Upper East Regional office of Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited has presented a cash reward of GH¢1,000 to Abdul-Kassim Majeeda, for arresting two boys who had stolen the Company’s cables. The Regional Manager of Ghana Telecom, Eric Asante, who presented the cash, said stealing of the company’s cables is a major setback to its operations resulting in the loss of huge sums of money, apart from constant disruptions of services.

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon accompanied by his wife, would pay a six-day visit to West Africa from April 18-24. A statement from the UN Information Centre in Accra, said he would make official visits to Ghana, Liberia, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire. His first stop would be Accra where he is scheduled to address the opening of the 12th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and hold talks with President John Kufuor and Foreign Minister Akwesi Osei Adjei.

Participants at the UNCTAD XII Civil Society Forum underway in Accra have called for the enactment of policies that would enable markets to work for the poor. There must also be regulatory mechanisms to deal with the activities of Trans-National Corporations (TNCs). They noted that although the attainment of independence by African countries shifted the political dynamics, it did not change the unbalanced trade and investment relations with Europe and the rest of the world.
